The Dronne River weaves its way through the historic village. Canoeing on the Dronne River (Brantme) Canoeing is one of the fun things to do in the Dordogne region, and it is especially popular in places like Brantme. The huge river snakes through the Dordogne valley, passing limestone cliffs and medieval villages that sit on the shore. For a 170km stretch from Argentat down to Mauzac the Dordogne River provides classic canoeing. ![]() If you do plan on camping in the Dordogne with kids, make sure you read our camping with kids checklist. Canoeing on the Dordogne River is the perfect way to see the area and the nature that makes it so special. Alternatively, if you want to be out in the sticks and away from it all, we recommend Sandaya Le Grand Dague.Īll these sites are great options if you are travelling with your own tent or caravan, and perhaps doing a France road trip with kid, or if you want to stay in static mobiles or safari tents. Others to consider are Le Paradis and Camping Soleil Plage. Our favourites by far for location and vibe are Le Port de Limeuil Campsite and Le Moulin de Paulhiac Campsite. We tend to visit the Dordogne over the summer months and have camped at six different sites over the years. If you are visiting in July or August, arrive before 10:30am to secure tickets. You can not book them online, although do visit the website for opening times and ticket pricing. Without a doubt, it’s the best way to see the river, the wildlife that inhabits it and some beautiful villages and Chateaux that lines its banks. Tickets are sold on a first come first served basis on entry to the cave. Gently meandering down the Dordogne river in a canoe on a sunny day is one of the most peaceful and enjoyable days activities to do in this spectacular region. Not only will you see lots of rock paintings, particularly of mammoths, but there are also ancient bear pits, where bears hibernated over winter. This is still one of the larger caves, and kids will love riding the electric train deep in to the cave system (this last about on hour).
